If you feel down for more than two consecutive weeks, it could be a signal of depression. It’s particularly difficult to admit you have a problem if you’re a black woman. However, you should know that this condition is not a sign of weakness or a negative personality. It is a major public health problem that affects many people.

1. Major Depression
It is very common among Black Women. Maybe it’s familiar to you by the name “major depressive disorder.” If you feel depressed and low almost every day of the week, you’re probably suffering from this type of depression. 2. Persistent Depressive Disorder
If you’ve felt depressed, fatigued, low self-esteem, and hopeless for more than 2 years, you’re suffering from this form of depression. You should seek help. Consider psychotherapy, medication, counseling or combination of these.
3. Bipolar Disorder
This is probably the most difficult type of depression. Bipolar disorder is used to be called the “manic depression”. It shares many symptoms with major depression, but its distinctive characteristics are periods of extreme high, as well. 4. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

5. Psychotic Depression
Along with the bipolar disorder, it is the most difficult form of depression. Besides major symptoms, people suffering from this type of depression, experience psychotic episodes, as well. They include hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there), delusions (false beliefs), and paranoia (false beliefs that others are trying to harm them). Treatments include medications and electroconvulsive therapy.
6. Postpartum Depression

7. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

The symptoms of the PMDD are more severe than the symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Usually, healthy diet and exercise can help with this type of depression.
8. ‘Situational’ Depression
When facing stressful event in life, such as a death of a family member, a divorce, or losing a job, women often experience periods of depression. You may be heard your doctor mentioning “stress response syndrome”, well that’s another name for the ‘situational’ depression. Counseling in these situations can be extremely beneficial.
9. Atypical Depression
Atypical depression is atypical, in the sense, that you don’t feel persistent sadness all the time. Your mood improves when something positive happens. Also, you may experience other symptoms, such as increased appetite, sleeping more than usual, feeling of heaviness in your arms and legs, oversensitivity to criticism, and so on. You should consider counseling, as it can be beneficial in overcoming this form of depression.
As you can see from this list, some forms of depression are more severe than others. It’s important for you to determine what type of depression you’re suffering from, so that you can take steps toward healing.
